Antique late 18th century German Solid black Oak panelled trunk or coffer

About the Item

This exquisite chest was crafted in Germany in the latter half of the 18th century. Both the lid and the front of the chest feature two flat recessed panels surrounded by a subtle frame. The chest rests on two elongated feet which were securely attached to the chest with pins. Made entirely of European oak with a beautiful grain pattern, the wood was stained a deep black and finished with shellac and wax. The external corners were reinforced with forged corner brackets. The chest also retains its original forged hinges, lock, and handles on both sides. The lock comes with its original key and functions perfectly. Inside, the chest has an additional compartment. The lid of this compartment can be used to keep the chest lid in an open position. Such chests are typically blanket chests and were used to store valuable clothing and blankets. The chest is in particularly good antique condition with a deep gloss and rich patina. It was gently cleaned in our workshop and the lock mechanism was made operational. The chest is flawless, clean, and ready for use.
