Antique William and Mary Style 19th Century Mule Chest of Drawers with Blanket

About the Item

An antique mid to late 19th century William and Mary style Mule Chest with a hinged lid that opens to a blanket chest storage area with two false drawer fronts at the top. Underneath, there are three graduated drawers. Brass escutcheons and pulls. A bit of history on the Mule Chest from the Columbia Daily Tribune website, "This unique piece of furniture has a lid that lifts from the top and a drawer or drawers below. A mule chest stands on legs or brackets and off of the floor, and most have locks. In Colonial homes, closets were virtually nonexistent. A mule chest was often the only case piece of furniture that a family owned." And to understand a bit about William and Mary style furniture, I offer this tidbit from Wikipedia, "The William and Mary style was a transitional style between Mannerist and Queen Anne furniture. The William and Mary style was very popular in Britain from 1700 to 1725, and in America until about 1735. It was largely supplanted in both nations by Queen Anne style furniture." And now for the chest of drawers on offer, it is rustic. Yes, there are old (and some new-ish) repairs. Yes, there are chips, splits, cracks and an alligatored and bloomed refinished finish. With all that being said, this charming chest brings a lot of history to any room. With storage a plenty and a bold size, this mule chest is ready to store all of your mentionables and unmentionables.

  • Tennessee Antique American Hand Built Primitive Blanket Chest Relic Cow Feeder
    Located in Atlanta, GA
Yes. You read that correctly. This is an antique American mid to late 19th century Tennessee hand built primitive blanket chest relic which served as a trough for a cow. I'll be the first (maybe) to tell you that antique dealers can spin a yarn. The dealer from whom I purchased this table - quick side note for a joke... 'there's two antique dealers on a deserted island - business is great' - told me this tale. "So Heather (that's me) I bought this chest from the great grandson who told me that one day his great grand ma asked his great grand pa for a blanket chest. The grand pa went out into their property, cut down a tree and made this for her. Later they used it to hold the feed for their cow." Not exactly Wordsworth, but it's a tale nonetheless. I bought because, well, have you looked at those lines? The wear? The silhouette? Seriously, this is a beautiful piece of rustic American primitive furniture...

  • 17th Century, William and Mary Chinoiserie Trunk on Stand
    Located in Nashville, TN
Featured is an extremely rare 17th century Dutch William & Mary Chinoiserie style coffer trunk on stand. This gorgeous piece was constructed of oak in the traditional William and Mary style. The trunk is japanned with red lacquer and was hand painted with Chinoiserie scenes of life in China. There are two iron straps that mount the top to the case. There is also one iron lock, although the key is absent the latch closes and holds the top securely in place. The lacquer is 90% complete with only small losses around the edges and in various places. The top has been reinforced with oak straps underneath to prevent the jointed board from moving. The lacquer has a warm patina throughout and shows very well. The lower stand is fitted with a pair of drawers that are also japanned and hand-painted with Chinoiserie scenes on the drawer fronts. Both drawers are fitted with Dutch style brass tear drop pulls. The stand itself is built of oak with turned legs that are pinned together with traditionally carved Jacobean Influenced leg stretchers on both the right and left sides as well as one main lower center stretcher. If you are looking for a very rare and well preserved piece this is the one. This item was almost surely on a Dutch East India Trading company...
