About the Item

This beautifully ornamented Korean chest once held blankets, clothing and valuables and may have been given as part of a marriage dowry. The elaborate brass hardware is made from a zinc-rich copper alloy and has been engraved with auspicious symbols, including likenesses of birds and flowers. The interior of the chest, originally papered, has been cleaned and sealed with a thin coat of varnish. Lock hardware and handles are original. Wear is consistent with age and use. These striking chests are commonly known as "tallboy wedding chests" and are typically constructed from elm wood and decorated with iron or brass hardware, including lock plates, strapping, handles and diamond-shaped surface studs. These types of chests were historically possessed by aristocrats during Korea's Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910). They were commonly used as storage for documents, valuables, and clothing while blankets were laid out a top during the day. The literal meaning of the Korean word bandaji is "half closing. This is because chests such as this one, have a front door that opens downward. Resulting in a "half open, half closed" chest. This bandaji has ample surface hardware, depicting flowers, birds, and various auspicious symbols. It has been fitted with a shelf for added usefulness as a bedside chest or entry console.

Condition:
Additions or alterations made to the original: A fully removeable shelf has been added in the center. The shelf lifts up to access items placed below. It's quite likely that the lock pin has been changed several times over the long lifetime of the piece. Wear consistent with age and use. We've kept the surface of the piece completely original except for a coating of beeswax. Inside, it has been cleaned.
