French 17th Century Carved Walnut Coffer with Arches, Trees and Flower Motifs

About the Item

French 17th century baroque carved walnut coffer or blanket chest. This quite early coffer is dovetailed with an extensively carved front of pine trees and blossoms arranged under classic arches and columns. The three center arches contain the flowers, while the two end spaces contain the stylized evergreen trees. The apron is shaped and there are applied floral buttons in the corners. The single board top has snipe hinges and the interior has an unlidded till, often used to store aromatic candles so the linens inside are imbued with a lovely scent. The carving has a naive nature to it, so one would conjecture that this was a country made coffer influenced by the grandeur of its day. 17th Century. Minor repair. Provenance: By descent from Sally Halverson, noted dealer and collector of rare decorative arts.
