English William and Mary 17th Century Oak Coffer with Bootjack Ends Small Size

About the Item

English William and Mary oak six plank coffer with shaped boot jack ends, interior till, molded top with chip carved edge and iron lock (no key). The chip carved ends and hand molded front edge along with the gracefully carved bootjack ends and shaped front foot cut from the full depth of the end boards, set this small coffer a part from the normal coffer of this form. More care and thought was taken in the creating and designing of this piece than is usual; most often edges would be square and the bootjack ends would be cut straight to form a V, rather than curved and shaped, the shaping into a front foot of the end boards is also unusual. This is quite a wonderful smallish coffer, narrow enough to be used in a multiplicity of locations from in front of a fireplace, to end of a bed, to coffee table for small seating area, to a hallway for storing boots and other oddments. Circa 1690. 39 1/4" long x 13 3/4" deep x 21" high
