About the Item
If this trunk could speak, it would tell a story of its many journeys from Frankfort, Kentucky to many parts of the country, beginning in the mid to late 1700’s. It would tell tales about its owners Jephthah and Peter Dudley, two well-known brothers, veterans of the War of 1812 and prominent businessmen of Frankfort, Kentucky.
In studying the Rustic construction of this trunk combined with an understanding of the time period and the geographic origin, one would determine it was primitively, yet hardily hand-made in the mid to late 1700’s. The trunk would eventually be used throughout the early 1800’s for the Dudley House’s stagecoach service line for offering transportation for guests who came from all over the country, to stay at their establishment.
The hand-forged nails, spikes, latch/lock works and handles, along with the raw hide used for hinging and knot repair in the construction of this trunk, make it historically unique and a stunning Kentucky-made piece for anyone interested in such rich history.
- Dimensions:Height: 18.25 in (46.36 cm)Width: 31 in (78.74 cm)Depth: 21 in (53.34 cm)
- Style:Rustic (Of the Period)
- Materials and Techniques:
- Place of Origin:
- Period:
- Date of Manufacture:c. late 1700's
- Condition:Repaired: As seen in the photos, well over 100 years ago, a pine not was repaired using what appears to be buffalo leather, judging from the thickness. This was layered into the void area and is hard a rock now. Fascinating element in this very old trunk! Wear consistent with age and use. The hinges used for opening and closing the lid are constructed from raw hide, something that would have been used during the early years in Kentucky's founding. Most fascinating.
