About the Item

Add elegance and history to your bedroom or living area with this richly decorated antique coffer. Crafted in Italy circa 1760, this rectangular chest rests on carved paw feet beneath a molded plinth base. The front and top panels are deeply carved with scrolling vine motifs and floral arabesques, while the sides feature classical urn reliefs framed by foliate scrolls. The beautifully hand-painted facade depicts an elaborate Renaissance landscape, figures conversing, weaving, and traveling in a horse-drawn chariot amid rolling hills and distant villas. A heraldic red eagle crest, symbolizing South Tyrol, decorates the lid’s center, surrounded by intricate acanthus and geometric borders. This grand cassone exemplifies the opulent artistry of Italian marriage chests, combining sculpture, painting, and gilding into a single masterpiece. The coffer retains its original polychrome and gilt patina, showing rich tones of ochre, red, and verdant green. Functional as a storage chest, coffee table, or bench at the foot of a king-size bed, it remains in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with remarkable surface depth and warmth.
