About the Item

Mid 19th century hand painted swedish oak coffer circa 1852. Beautiful dome top coffer made from solid oak.  Hand painted using traditional methods in a green, brown and yellow scheme. Profusely hand painted front with tassels and borders, initialed on the front jms and dated 1852 26th of february.  Brown painted strap work, lid edge and feet.  Lid opens with working lock and key to reveal a later painted interior, which is missing it's usual candle box. Expected surface marks, fading to woodwork. Minor losses to decorative elements around the feet.  Structurally strong and ready for everyday use.

A very attractive antique early 19th century hand painted folk art Swedish dowry/blanket chest, circa 1820. The sarcophagus shaped lidded top enclosing a large storage area for clothing or bedding, the interior of the lid still possesses the original un-oxidized paint. Both the body and top of the chest retain the original hand painted decoration. The front, top and rear with oval cartouches painted with exotic birds and surrounded by stylized floral & fruiting decoration, each side has a circular cartouche with corresponding decoration. The sides of the chest have the original cast iron carrying handles, the chest is raised upon bracket feet, the chest is clean and aroma free and is ready to store your bedding, clothing or anything else you care to place in it!
