Unique Small Size & Quality Hand Carved Tiger Oak Gothic Revival Chest, 1920

About the Item

Stunning and practical size, multi purpose Gothic chest / box from a monastery. This here Gothic chest is one of the smallest yet most stylish we ever had the pleasure of offering. It is entirely hand-crafted and hand carved out of solid oak and tiger oak and it has a beautiful patina. What also makes this chest stand out from almost all other pieces that we have ever seen is that there are Gothic crosses on top of the stunningly handcarved front with the pair of Gothic church window-like panels. The bookpage / letter panels on the sides too are very well carved and in superb condition. Have you also noticed how this antique chest is put together with the same techniques that they used in Medieval times? The stylish and great workmanship connections with the wooden oak dowels are clear to see and they too are a sign of the great quality and durability of this unique antique. The lid on top still opens and closes perfectly thanks to the equally well crafted and extremely durable, wrought iron hinges. This beautiful and quality crafted still stands as strong and stable as the day it was handmade and according to its former owner this chest was initially for a monastery in the east of Holland. This also explains why this unique chest is practically mint, because monks usually looked after their material posessions better than most people would. If you appreciate the uniqueness, the quality and the pure Gothic design as much as we do then you will love our price for this chest. Especially when taken into account that perfect packing and worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days are complimentary. Measures: Maximum width x height x depth: 25.2 x 20.5 x 17.5 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Largest Antique & Top Quality Hand Carved Gothic Revival Barometer & Thermometer
Located in Lisse, NL
Exceptional and unique, 3 feet tall, Gothic Revival wall barometer, circa 1890. This unique antique from the second half of the 19th century, in our view, is the dream of anyone with a Gothic (inspired) interior. This design could not be more Gothic and to have found a barometer of this size and with this many Gothic details, again, felt like a blessing. And even though we had to pay-up to be able to acquire it, when you find an antique that is this rare and good then you should always try to buy it. This monumental and solid nutwood antique barometer is entirely hand carved and, as you can see in our photos, the workmanship is second to none. This work of Gothic wall art is perfectly symmetrical and we love the fact that only the large church pilars are carved in a different pattern. This rare design feature, to us, shows the creative nature of its designer. We also love the many Gothic church spires on top and the way this entire 'composition' is superbly balanced. There also is small 'ledge' underneath the barometer and thermometer, possibly for displaying some small sculptures. The only downside would be that the inside of the barometer/thermometer is not squeaky clean. Maybe it is easy to open the front of the barometer, but we have no experience with that. Have you also noticed the amazingly detailed Gothic leafs at the top of both the large pilars? They too display the amazing workmanship of a seasoned craftsman. Besides the enormous height and width, what also makes this rare barometer truly impressive is its depth, because this almost gives you the idea of looking at a magnificent barometer through 3D glasses. All these top quality and impressive details together make this Gothic barometer...

Rare Gothic German Oak and Iron Chest Known as "Stollentruhe"
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
This large chest stands on high legs prolonging the lateral jambs. Presenting a sober and severe appearance the chest still belongs to the Medieval tradition. The piece is made from very high quality Hungarian wood. The jambs are joined to the facade and the lateral sides thanks to pegged mortise and tenon securing a great stability and squareness between each parts. The upper lid is made of two joined parts and so is the facade. The ironwork is present all over the surface of the chest and brings both an additional stability to the construction as well as a rich decor. The lid is secured with hinges. Hinges also run all over the chest in horizontal and vertical lines, ending in a floral motif. The hasp lock is also very ornamental. Those chests always present important proportions especially when they are made early in the period. This model was very popular in Germany and stayed in vogue until the 16th century. However the feet Gothic decor...

Chest or Stollentruhe, Early 16th Century, German Gothic, Oak Chest, Original
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
This standing chest is of clamp-front construction, extensively decorated with long, ironwork straps with quatrefoil finials which ‘wrap’ around it, and has an ornate, central lockplate, and front legs with full, height stiles. The ironwork straps and finials are fixed with convex, headed nails: running along the front, five long straps; the two side straps; and the five straps on the top. On the chest front, centrally placed, is a large, iron lockplate with four outer, radiating spade finals in each corner and three, superimposed spade finials (a symbol of nobility) which are pierced with the initials ‘BB’. The lockplate receives a corresponding, external hasp fitted to the lid. Below the floor of the chest, the two front stile legs retain most of their original height. The lid is supported by substantial iron strap hinges that extend right down the back of the chest. Inside the chest at the left end is a shallow, oak till. Construction The chest is of joined, 'clamp-front' construction, reinforced by the nailed, iron mounts. In total it uses ten, oak boards which were riven and planed. The back and front are each formed from a large single plank held to the full height stiles by long, pegged tenons. The sides are also single boards joined into the stiles using long tenons held by dowels, and extend down below the chest bottom, concealing the ends of the bottom boards. The bottom consists of a single board cut into the sides and shallow rebates in the stiles. The front and back boards are dowelled into the bottom boards. The lid which overhangs the sides has a narrow cleat at each end, and consists of one wide plank which has bowed a little as a result of shrinkage. Ironwork : The wrought ironwork straps, lockplate, hasp and lock all appear all appear to be early, and of the same original manufacture and are fixed with convex headed nails. There is mild dark staining of the oak around the iron mounts, possibly because of low tannin content in the oak. Length 172 cm., 67 ¾ in., Height 71.5 cm., 28 ¼ in., Depth 63 cm., 24 ¾ in., Related to: No 900:2-1904 V&A Museum, London. Stadtmuseum Dusseldorf. Decorative Arts Museum Berlin.
