Very Rare 15th C. Medieval English Carved Solid Oak Dowry Coffer with Drawer

About the Item

Exquisitely carved and well preserved Medieval England dowry coffer. Remarkable decorative "palm-arched" reliefs on the facade echo the design on the drawer at base (a rare feature). Peg work joinery and a lovely hand tooled zigzag motif trailing the subtle edges make this a conversation piece to behold not to mention a once esteemed dowry chest from a time when prized possessions were housed in these. Light bow on the lid suggests it probably doubled up as a bench simultaneously. The hinges show signs of having been upgraded at some point in its' long life but even they appear to be at least a few hundred years old. The oak has beautifully patinated to a dark hue over time. All in all a stunning piece of well preserved history with a lot of story, life and character yet to offer.
