About

An incredibly fun and playful display cabinet in the Rococo taste with a distinctively Venetian flare, this positively gorgeous cabinet retains an early gray painted finish that is beautifully worn throughout. Probably circa the first quarter of the 19th century, the carvings show a creativity that is particularly attractive. Stepping away from the traditional motifs and embellishments of the Louis XV era, the carver has incorporated hints of latticework, unique fully-developed rocaille formations in the crest and a most effective design for the feet that borrows the lobes of a shell for effect. Most of these carvings are highlighted with an early worn gilding and are noteworthy for their complexity and exuberance - each is carved of the solid beechwood, not simply being applied elements. The doors open to give access to the shelved interior, the three shelves visible through the panes of glass while the bottom of the cabinet is hidden by the wooden paneling of the doors. This is such a rich and visually compelling cabinet - a most fine acquisition. Measurements: 86 1/2" H x 19" D x 61" W Condition report: Old gray painted finish with some later touch-ups; extensive flaking and loss to painted surfaces. Paint is still not entirely stable and some flaking can be expected during shipment. Large chips and loss to carvings throughout. Joint shrinkage in doors along with some stable shrinkage cracks. Interior with new woven linen upholstery. Shelves used to be upholstered but we chose to leave them bare for contrast. Joints tightened with modern corner blocking throughout. Metal plate crafted to cover an opening in one backboard and to provide strength to one foot joint. No key (a key is pictured, but it is simply included to help open the doors and does not have any function). Shelves are not adjustable.
