Edwardian English Biscuit Display Case / Display Cabinet Macfarlane Lang & Co

About the Item

A unique and singular piece of furniture is a biscuit display cabinet from the early 20th century, made of wood and glass. This special shelf was designed to hold cans or packages at an angle, so that they could be easily accessed and, at the same time, displayed in a more visual way. It consists of three drawers of identical size (23 x 95 x 23 cm), covered by glass lids that could be lifted to access their contents. This biscuit rack is topped with the recognisable inscription “Macfarlane Lang & Co. Biscuits”, which links it directly to one of the oldest and most prestigious companies in the sector. This attractive piece, which once displayed the delicious Macfarlane Lang biscuits, is still in good condition and has great potential to be converted into a bookcase or shoe rack, perfect for adding character to any space in your home. It follows the style of Edwardian oak shelving, similar to those made by Globe-Wernicke. On the top you can read the name of the brand of biscuits sold in this display, “Macfarlane Lang & Co.”, an interesting company founded in 1817 as a small bakery, which later had a distinguished career in biscuit making. Although it operates under another name today, the manufacture and sale of biscuits continues. More about Globe-Wernicke… The Globe-Wernicke company, known for quality and craftsmanship, was founded in 1899 when Otto Wernicke, owner of Wernicke Furniture Co, purchased the Globe Company. Wernicke also acquired Fred Macey Co., which manufactured the famous stackable lawyer-style bookcases. These modular bookcases, patented by the company in 1900, were high quality and made from fine woods such as oak, walnut, and mahogany. Their innovative design allows them to be stacked and adapted to different configurations, making them a very popular and collectible product today. Globe-Wernicke was the leading manufacturer and supplier of this type of stackable bookcases until it went bankrupt in 1932 due to the Great Depression, but reopened in 1934. Globe-Wernicke had factories producing furniture in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
