English Regency Metamorphic Book Case -Desk

About the Item

This finely made English regency period metamorphic bookcase-desk is also of an interesting and useful small scale. The mahogany construction is done in a clean simple straight-grained wood while the drawer fronts are enlivened with crotch mahogany veneers that are match booked across the front. This piece can be used either as a bookcase or a small display area for objects of art or a personal collection. The metamorphic section or the shelf section above the drawers is composed of a leather topped writing surface with gold tooling concealed within a fold-out area. The access is centered on an inset ring handle and opens to rest on the pull out slides (see photos 6,7,8). An interesting point is the small center drawer which besides containing the expected space also houses a secret hidden section for important papers money or other small valuables. The piece has very finely cast brass lion head pulls on the drawers and iron braces for strength and support. The piece's small scale and lively proportion make it great to use in small spaces or as a highly individual decorative accessory. It as well retains its original color and patina and has just been newly French polished to bring out that luster and old color.
