About the Item

This rare expressionist bookcase design, created by Fritz August Breuhaus, was manufactured by H. Hömig, Hönningen in Western Germany. It features a veneer in burled walnut and includes nine drawers. This model was originally displayed at the exhibition „Das Deutsche Buch“ and subsequently commissioned in 1924 for a private residence in the vicinity of Münster, Germany. The bookcase’s structured design of modularity and verticality is conceptually comparable to other works of that era. The layered fireplace in Paul Zucker’s (1891-1975) reception room reflects his modernist ethos and embrace of geometric order. The design is characterised by linear aesthetics and modular repetition. Matěj Blecha’s (1861–1919) 1912 lamppost is a functional piece that also serves as a sculptural expression of stability and aspiration. All of these designs echo the rhythm and segmented progression of Constantin Brâncuși’s (1876–1957) Endless Column, creating a sense of upward motion which was intended as a tribute to infinity and the eternal. This library can serve as a medium where ancient craft and abstract expression merge - burled walnut veneer unfolds like ink on paper, a quiet rhythm of structure and intuition. Craft energies and cubist forms find harmony here, not as opposites, but as reflections of a deeper order. In its adequate setting, it does not impose; it resonates. A synthesis of shards and gestures, history and abstraction, it becomes a still point in the flow of space, a place where time gathers and unfolds.
