About the Item

Top design and top quality workmanship from Amsterdam from the early 1900's. One of a kind bookcase or side cabinet from 't Modelhuis by Jewish furniture maker Napoleon le Grand. Work from this Amsterdam based, Jewish furniture maker from the earliest years of the 1900s is extremely hard to find and his pieces never fail to impress. This solid nutwood bookcase is inlaid with crisp, geometrical motifs and also with stunning, stylized animals on all sides including salamader, butterflies, mice, crab, snail and fish. However, what makes this Le Grand cabinet stand out from the very few we have seen in our lives, is the large size and stunning pair of kaktoe bird's heads. Their amazing presence and light color makes them stand out perfectly against the darker nutwood of this cabinet. From this maker in general and with these inlaid animals in particular, only very few pieces are known in the world today. This fine specimen has a few minor imperfections, but the unique craftsmanship and the stunning inlaid animal sculptures are an absolute joy to look at. The combination of the design, the colours and the incredible craftsmanship that it breathes, simply lifts your spirit in a way that no contemporary piece ever could. This stunning bookcase has three doors that still open and close perfectly and they all come with a perfect working lock and key. The two side doors come with the original beveled glass panels and the original brass lock plates with amazing details. The middle door misses its lock plate, but the perfectly inlaid pair of kaktoe birds more than compensate for that minor imperfection. It is almost as if they are greeting each other with their claws. The combination of the nutwood exterior, the sleek and timeless lines in the design, the unique intarsia and the beautifully patinated interior (all shelves are adjustable in height) makes this 'sideboard' stand out from anything you will have ever seen. Apart from traces of use and some minor wear this one of a kind antique sideboard is in good condition and absolutely ready for you to use and enjoy. This handcrafted antique cabinet can be used as a sideboard, as a dry bar, as an office cabinet for files, as a bookcase and even partially as a display cabinet. Its marvelous design and presence will immediately change the look and feel of the room it is in and it will lift your spirit every time you look at it. Mind you, our price for this museum worthy cabinet includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth top: 47.5 x 55.5 x 17.7 inches. Width x depth without the top: 51.5 x 16 inches We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again).

Unique Liberty & Co Marked Great Arts & Crafts Cabinet Attr. to Leonard Wyburd
By Leonard Wyburd
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning Arts and Crafts cupboard by one of the greatest. We are certain that this wonderful handcrafted, stained oak cabinet was designed by Leonard Francis Wyburd (1865-1958). We are certain, because of several style elements that are typical for his designs for Liberty & Co in the late 19th century. We have no pictures in books or other evidence, but the pieces from his hand that can be found on the internet reveal style elements that are very similar and they were used by no one else. The design of this incredibly artistic piece shows both the influences of Medieval and Rural Britain. It were these early and amazing pieces of furniture from the Liberty Studio (headed by Wyburd) that made people across the continent speak of the 'Stile Liberty'. Designers like Wyburd and pieces of furniture like this amazing cabinet, influenced and shaped the entire development of the Jugendstil and Art Nouveau in Europe. That too makes this rare piece important for collectors and possibly for museums around the world. This cupboard is a work of art and it is an absolute joy to look at. It is all made of solid and stained oak and apart from the stunning and impressive overal design with the overhanging top with supporting beams, there are some key style elements that make this cabinet really stand out. First of all, there is the ever so true saying which is embossed in copper in beautiful Arts and Crafts letters which reads 'WELCOME IS THE BEST CHEER'. Secondly, there are the rare leather panels in the doors which come with (faded) images in slight reliëf. The one on the left is of a man in a hat and tights and he is playing a mandolin. The leather artwork...
