About the Item

These elegant Chinese book cabinets once took pride of place in a Qing-dynasty home or scholars' retreat, proudly elevating a collection of books, scholars' rocks, porcelains, and other beautiful objects. The open shelves of each bookcase are enclosed with slatted side panels, each vertical spindle shaped to a continuous, undulating curve. The wavy lines add a lightness to the angular silhouette and bring subtle design intrigue to the otherwise minimally decorated form. The cabinets feature lower compartments for additional storage and are darkened by a layer of glossy black lacquer, now faded along the corners for a timeworn finish.
