About the Item

A rare and unusual set of three Italian walnut bookcases from the late 17th century with extraordinary provenance. The set is comprised of a single freestanding bookcase and two bookcases which join together loosely to create a wider bookcase. Both pieces of the same height. Two open adjustable shelves sit atop a lower cabinet with doors and an additional loose shelf inside. The interior shelf space and shelves, in the upper area, are upholstered in fabric and tape trim with some age and wear. Exquisitely carved corinthian columns on either side of shelves. For the wider piece, a second bookcase looks to have been cut and added to create two bookcases as one piece. Separation can be seen at the top right where they join which adds to the charm and character of the piece. A substantial cornice a tops each bookcase. Every detail of it's making leads to an able craftsman of the middle of the XVII century. Provenance: This set may have come from an old church, as paneling or a sacristy cupboard, originally. The set was acquired in the late 1950s by Delia Sassoli de' Bianchi de Medici, The Countess of Piano, from a Genoese antiquarian for her house in S. Margherita Ligure (the village before Portofino). It then became part of the contents of the Villa Sassoli de' Bianchi de Medici, in San Sisto, Bologna. The previous owners were another very old bolognese family, Conti Panzacchi, very wealthy as they were for at least three centuries notary publics, a very enriching profession in Italy since a very long time. They where shipped to New York by Count Riccardo Sassoli de' Bianchi de Medici to furnish the former Wanamacher's cottage in First Neck Lane in Southampton, New York, when he bought in 1978. This is an extraordinary set with a remarkable earlier life in Italy.
