About the Item

18th Century Country French Regence Buffet in Stripped Oak was crafted during the reign of Louis XVI who championed the neoclassical revival, but the country was in such a state of turmoil rural artisans did not necessarily follow the trends set by the court, as had been done for centuries prior. Hand-crafted from select old-growth oak, this unusual example features a thick plank top with a half-bullnose bevel around the edge, which overlooks the top tier of three drawers. The outer drawers are conveniently accessed with a pair of brass knobs each, while the center drawer has a brass key guard only, indicating this was the cutlery drawer and needed to be secured from the curious hands of the youngsters. All three drawers have a cross hatched background, with the outer drawers depicting foliate sprays integrated with the background. Below, two large cabinet doors and one smaller door in the center all feature a finely molded framework surrounding carved panels. The outermost feature stylized fleurs de lys on scrolled raised panels, while the center door features a diamond form filled with a classic Rococo motif of a stylized shell with foliates in an asymmetrical design. All three doors are enhanced with brass key guards and open to reveal a very spacious interior. The undulating scrolled apron below, which is supported by scrolled legs, provides support. Note the generous use of pegged mortise & tenon joinery throughout the design, front and solid oak hand-chamfered panels even on the back! Painstakingly stripped using our proprietary process that retains the patina and sheer natural beauty of the old wood, all performed by our expert in-house staff. Circa 1770s Measures 45H x 63.5W x 22.5D Available for pickup in the Dallas Design District, Dallas, TX.
