Early 19th Century French Restauration Period Book Matched Walnut Buffet
About the Item
This early nineteenth century French Restauration period buffet or sideboard originally belonged to a judge in a manor house on the Rue de Carcassonne in the city of Tours. This piece features a hinged lift up top that reveals a cavity where flour would have been kept to make bread. Today this cavity makes an unsuspected hiding place for valuables. The buffet is fitted with two lower doors of book matched walnut that open to reveal an interior with a single shelf. The doors are flanked by classic squared half columns that rest on plinth feet. Includes single key used as a door pull, circa 1820.
