About the Item

A tall Georgian style pine dresser base from England c.1860. This is a quintessential piece of wonderful country English furniture created to fill a specific need for kitchens and dining rooms the length and breadth of England. It is known as a dresser base because it would have originally had a hanging plate rack above it where platters, pewter and tea cups were placed. Ergo, this piece was the base to the dresser. Please note the economical use of large pine timber boards used in its construction that showcased the beauty of the grain. The power of the design rests in its repetition of rectangular forms from the drawer fronts to the cabinet doors to the frame and the flat plinth base that extends along the bottom from side to side. Everything is symmetrical on the base as the drawers are placed exactly above the doors, the knobs that enable the cabinets to be opened and closed are set together and the brass drawer handles with their distinctively shaped back plated are in the centre of each of the drawers and directly beneath the oval brass escutcheons where the key is inserted to lock and unlock each drawer. Both of the cabinet doors have a recessed panel outlined with large moulding that provides further emphasis on the geometric nature of the entire piece. Notice how the top surface extends slightly beyond the cabinet and is balanced by the framing provided by the plinth base that is also wider than the cabinet. Not only does the plinth provide structural stability it also prevents any stray item from rolling beneath the piece that would be difficult to retrieve. Both of the cabinet doors open fully and within there is a shelf to increase the utility of the storage space. So not only is the piece handsome but it is eminently functional as well. The patina has a very pleasing warmth to it that reflects years of waxing and polishing and its fantastic relaxed nature makes it perfect for use today in a variety of areas in a home.
