Louis XV period Serpentine Buffet in Walnut, France, c. 1750

About the Item

A very fine and large Buffet, dating from the Louis XV period and originating in France. The serpentine frame constructed in solid Walnut, featuring deep carved designs in the Rococo taste on all exposed sides. The top a single slab of striated marble in pale green, grey, & white. Original to the buffet, the marble with conforming serpentine form, and featuring a hand-shaped moulded edge. Each of the Buffet's hinged doors in solid Walnut. Both feature a moulded edge, cartouche-shaped central field. Accented by crisp floral & foliate carvings, and with a fine depth and age to the Walnut. The sides in a fluid half-serpentine shape, with a similar double-layered border. The inner border with a bonnet-top form, reserving a large field constructed of a single plank of Walnut. The case resting atop four shaped feet, connected by serpentine aprons on the exposed sides. The front apron with central cabochon & rocaille design, foliate accents interspersed throughout.
