About the Item

Corner cabinet, The Hague circa 1775 Dimensions: 270 cm high, 132 cm wide, and 72 cm deep. Oak core veneered with mahogany, gilded bronze fittings. Provenance: Passed down from generation to generation in a The Hague family until 2003. Sotheby's Amsterdam 2003 European Furniture, Sculpture and Decorative Arts / Lot 359 This corner cabinet, presumed to have been crafted around 1775 in The Hague, remained in the same family from The Hague until 2003. It represents a unique example of a type of furniture that was commonly produced in the Netherlands during the latter half of the 18th century. This piece is particularly notable for its design; no similar corner cabinet is known to exist. The cabinet is a pure example of the transitional period, with the crisp lines of the Louis XVI style interspersed with the distinctly Louis XV carvings on the doors of the upper section. The cabinet's top is also of interest; it is partially curved and topped with a carved vase on a pedestal. The interior is designed to display tableware, featuring three scalloped-edge shelves at the front, all made from solid oak. A pull-out shelf is found in the middle rail. The bottom section has two doors and rests on bracket feet. The cabinet has been exceptionally well-preserved and boasts an original wax finish that imparts a rich, warm patina. It has recently been reviewed and is in good condition.
