19th Century English Satinwood Neoclassical Style Side Cabinet By Maple & Co

A very fine 19th century Satinwood side cabinet in the Neoclassical style, of arc-en-arbalette form, rising from six carved elegant legs, the central bow fronted door centred by a neoclassical scene with floral highlights which opens to reveal a mahogany interior with a single shaped serpentine shelf, the flanking side panels having central cartouches depicting neoclassical urns with floral highlights. The single central drawer also mahogany lined above a top having half rounded central back panel with ebony outline stringing within a border of polychrome hand painted decoration in the style of Angelica Kauffman. Circa 1890 English Maple & Co: Maple & Co (1870 – 1950) Maple & Co was one the largest and most successful British furniture retailers and cabinet makers in the Victorian and Edwardian periods. They were well known for fine quality, craftsmanship and were specialists in copying old designs but bringing them up to date to the more modern trends. They produced many quality pieces of furniture in designs such as Hepplewhite and Chippendale but also were well known for their quality Arts & Crafts Furniture. Maple & Co was first established by John Maple, a shopkeeper, Surrey, who later opened a furniture shop in Tottenham Court Road but it was his son, John Maple, who pushed Maples & Co to be such a huge success. With his skills in business, by the 1880s they were the largest furniture store in the world as they exported their fine antique furniture to many different countries and were well known throughout the interiors world.

A late 19th century side cabinet by Edwards & Roberts, with the original makers labels "Edwards & Roberts". The shaped top tier with brass gallery above a bevelled mirrored back resting on a beautifully figured D-end top with shaped brass galleries, above a frieze drawer, above an inlaid panelled door flanked by bow fronted inlaid panels, resting on four slim and slender tapered legs with brass capped toe. circa 1900 English Artists Biography: Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu. Edwards & Roberts was one of the principal London companies working in the taste of the late 18th century. They started business in 1845 and by 1854 were trading as "Edwards & Roberts, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture".
