19th Century Gothic Revival Confiturier ~ Cabinet

About the Item

19th Century Gothic Revival Confiturier ~ Cabinet celebrates the majesty of the style that dates back to the middle of the 12th century in France! The top, sides and legs are all crafted with a restrained elegance that includes careful attention to edging. The ornamentation and visual appeal are concentrated on the front facade, which features corner pilasters carved with wheat and spire columns set on pediments, providing a framework for the intricately carved full width drawer and single cabinet door. The drawer features a horizontal molding design, with the cabinet door oriented on a vertical basis with circles, arches and scrollwork all intertwined for an intriguing visual effect. The drawer and door are fitted with forged steel pull, catch and strap hinges. Both open to reveal substantial storage. A pair of corbel designs embrace the feet below for a perfect finishing touch. 19th Century French Henri II Neoclassical Walnut Confiturier, Cabinet
Located in Dallas, TX
19th century French Henri II neoclassical walnut confiturier, cabinet is a stellar example of the petite buffet with one door affectionately called the confiturier because of its original design being intended to store confit jars in the kitchen. At some point it became obvious that a very useful miniature buffet like this would be ideal for other rooms, and the genre blossomed. This example, rendered from sumptuous French walnut, features neoclassical architecture including turned columns carved with fletching on the face fitted with Doric capitals on each cornerpost, flanking the stylized pyramidal heraldic crest on display in full relief at the center of the cabinet door. Fletching also appears on the drawer facade above, with the entire affair graced with fine molded detail. Ideal as a bathroom vanity cabinet...

To each side of the door are two beautifully carved panels. The door has brass hinges and escutcheon. It locks with the key retained. The carving is mirrored on both sides of the piece, each comprising five carved panels. The red undertones suggest that this is a chestnut rather than an oak piece. The overall structure owes much to the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century France, with a nod to Renaissance Revival. The door panel is dominated by a lovely example of Gothic tracery in the form of a half moon “window...
