About the Item

Serre-Bijoux cabinet of Marie Antoinette, 20th century. This splendid cabinet was made according to the Versailles "Serre bijoux". From 1770 the sleeping Chambers of Marie Antoinette were redesigned. In the course of this, she commissioned Germanist Jean Ferdinand Schwerdfeger (1734-1818) and Jean-Démosthène Dugourc (1749-1825) to produce the jewelry cabinet copied here. The original can still be admired today in the Grande Chambre of Versailles. The corpus, in the still typically two-part structure, rests on slightly tapered legs with closed struts. The box-shaped tower above it is divided by a three-door front with corresponding school lines. In addition, four caryatids deposited in gold emerge. The concluding, slightly protruding cornice, with a curved gallery, is crowned by a mythological character scene. The corpus is richly ornamented with crossbands, garlands and floral applications. Mythological representations can be found in medallions as well as cross-and high-rectangular filling fields.
