American 19th Century Painted Two Part Antique Cupboard Cabinet, Pennsylvania

About the Item

Retaining its original and heavily oxidized painted surfaces, the form is rich in variation and depth of pigment. The primary covering is a mix of deep burgundy with ebony highlights scattered randomly throughout, this contrasted sharply against the cream outlines and backdrops; each door is embellished with delightful yellow repeating half-moon motifs around large hearts. Beneath the sharply projecting crown molding, faux dentil molding is painted along the top in ebony over the deeply carved recessed panels flanking the fifteen panes of glass, much of these original and full of bubbling and ripples. The upper section terminates over a crescent molding that flows from one foot to the other - the form of this termination is exactly replicated in the feet of the base, bringing a flawless sense of graduated harmony in the two sections. The case construction is rather interesting, where rather than dovetailing the drawers along the sides and back, as is typical, the sides of the drawer hook to the face with a half-dovetail; these sides are nailed to the front. The back of the drawer locks into the sides in a sliding-dovetail. The bottom of each drawer is deeply chamfered and set in grooves on either side (these since nailed along the back edge due to shrinking along the grains). The front feet of the cupboard have exposed dovetails on both sides, all feet with absolutely enormous secondary blocking to easily support the weight of the case. The backboards are nailed in the typical manner, in perfect tidy rows, wooden pegs securing the interior shelves through the backboards. The crown molding along the top lifts to reveal a secret compartment for storing family valuables. Condition: Drawer pulls and door knobs replaced in nearly the same holes; hinges original; scars and tiny holes where old hardware used to be on the doors; several replaced panes of glass (most original); small piece of molding absent upper right corner of side crown molding; original feet.
