Edwardian Marquetry Inlaid and Hand Painted Cabinet after 'Edward and Roberts'
About the Item
A fabulous Edwardian cabinet in the manner of 'Edward and Roberts' London. This exceptional piece is finely carved and of fantastic quality with rich patination, fine grain with cross banding, line inlay and stunning marquetry detail depicting Neoclassical motifs throughout. The well figured crossbanded top with marquetry inlay above a single crossbanded drawer frieze with a fabulous swag of marquetry ribbon and foliate motif detail flanked with finely cast brass swan neck pulls. Raised above a pair of cabinet doors flanked with canted sides and which opens to reveal a shelved interior with both doors featuring panels to the central reserves depicting exquisite hand painted Neoclassial figural garden scenes in gorgeous hues of pinks, creams, golds, greens and blues. Supported on simple panelled frieze, terminating on elegantly tapering stylised arrow and ball foot.

Edward & Roberts
Edward and Roberts were founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Edward and Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.

This is a truly magnificent antique Edwardian Goncalo Alves and marquetry inlaid upright display cabinet by Edwards & Roberts, circa 1890 in date.
The cabinet is bordered with boxwood lines and decorated with scrolling foliage, cherubs, mythical creatures, urns of fruit and anthemions
The moulded and simulated dentil cornice is above a pair of glazed panel doors with a mirrored back. The cupboard below with a pair of panel doors that open to a spacious cupboard. The cabinet is raised on square tapered legs, united by a concave fronted platform undertier, terminating in spade feet.
