About the Item

Rare 18th Century Well-Crafted Regency Brass Mounted Mahogany Three-Tiered Circular Dumb Waiter. Rotating circular tiers are each mounted on four brass column supports, all raised on a tripod base, terminating with brass sabots and casters (allowing them to be moved easily). Dumb-Waiters were popular in 18th and 19th century England, having originated in the lavish banquets of the upper classes. They were free-standing and supported by graduating trays that could hold wine, confections and other delights. Guests walked around he room at banquets to speak with others and were able to access treats without the need for servants being seen frequently. This also allowed guests to consort with others without fear of being overheard by staff. It allowed a seamless dining experience, where guests could focus on conversation and enjoyment rather than the logistics of serving. In essence, dumbwaiters served a crucial role in organizing, presenting, and maintaining the luxury and efficiency of high-society gatherings during banquets. They were both functional and a part of the ceremonial atmosphere of these events.
