Fine French Napoleon III Ormolu Mounted Ebonized Wood & Pietra Dura Cabinet
About the Item
A very fine French 19th century Napoleon III Ormolu Mounted Ebonized wood and Pietra Dura Meuble d'Appui à Hauteur with a grey marble top. The single front-door black-lacquered cabinet centered with a Pietra Dure (Semi precious hard stones) plaque depicting a floral bouquet, flanked by ormolu mounts of Bacchus, with floral ormolu trims and brass inlaid strips; the sides surmounted with ormolu mounts depicting a standing Putto. The base centered with an ormolu female mask flanked by medallions and acanthus. Probably by Befort Frers. Circa: Paris, 1870-1880.
Befort Frers.
The firm of Befort specialized in 'furniture in the style of Boulle and in the use of bronze and hardstone' (D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le mobilier français du XIXe siècle, Paris, 1965, p. 29) and received a medal at the 1844 Exposition des produits de l'industrie français. Befort Jeune was recorded at Neuves-Saint-Gilles from 1844 until 1880.

- Condition:Refinished. Repaired: Minor repairs to the pietra dura stones. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. A truly beautiful and very decorative cabinet.
