French Louis XIV Oratory - Crucifixion Scene in Marquetry, circa 1700 France

About the Item

Superb oratory in oak from the Louis XIV period. The lower part forming a drop-leaf desk, has a door with its original hinges and rests on a platform. In the upper part, the pediment is formed of an exceptional scene of crucifixion in marquetry, remarkably executed, representing Christ on the cross with at his feet, the virgin married in prayer and Saint John. The whole scene is surmounted by a crowned sky, retaining a curtain drape. The marquetry panel is inserted in two Classic columns. This doratory type was placed in the rooms of manors and castles and served as a private chapel, France, end of the 17th century-beginning of the 18th century.

Having a slant-front bureau with tall raised back decorated with three Renaissance Revival style high relief panels, the center depicting religious scene comprising Jesus and winged Saint, the side panels with foliate floral fruit pendant carvings, flanked by classical turned baluster-form columns, surmounted with highly stylized hand carved and turned finials.
