About

The Mosaic cabinet in selenite, bronze and claro walnut is a strikingly opulent example of a few of the most beautiful materials in the natural world that we have been given as furniture makers to work with. This particular Mosaic Cabinet is configured as a secretary with three drawers, two doors with adjustable shelves, and a fall-front writing surface that holds leather-lined cubbies for papers and utensils. Our drawers are dovetailed, hard maple, that utilize durable, soft-close hardware for this material. The geometric pieces of selenite are carefully outlined with polished bronze strips, setting each individual piece in a frame of its own. The bronze is meticulously inlaid and left unfinished, allowing it to come to a lovely patina over time. The Claro Walnut case is rich and deep in its brown tones, bringing this ethereal piece of furniture back down to earth. Selenite has a remarkably old history in art and architecture. This crystal is known for its clarity and translucent to transparent qualities. From ancient windows in Roman basilicas, to protecting the surface of German sacred art, in jewelry and furnishings, this clear crystal has been admired and used for its unique physical properties. The selenite we work with ranges in appearance from crystal clear, to a silky or pearly translucent white. Its beauty is achieved from the layers of crystal that build to form a pool of naturally occurring depth in its clarity. It is responsibly sourced from the legal custodian and caretaker of a large quarry in the United States. We request specimens that are selected based on their size and translucency for the look we are trying to achieve. However, the very unique qualities of each crystal are evident as each has a different formation from the other. This piece is substantial in its weight and presence. The hardware and supports for all parts are carefully and specifically utilized in this piece to ensure smoothness as well as durability. Selenite is limited to being sourced only a few times a year, so these beautiful pieces of furniture are often times a wonderful thing to wait upon. Your order will be carefully and individually prepared, sourced and built by the careful eyes and hands of many people who love to see beautiful things created. Newell Design specializes in bespoke work and commissions and welcomes your inquiry.

Jeffrey and Elizabeth Newell founded their studio in 1996. Influenced in their mid-20's by weekends spent in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the MOMA, they resolved to establish a business that would pursue craft at the highest level possible and design and create beautiful well made things. For the past 20 years, they have honed and developed their studio work, with bespoke commissions on some of the most demanding projects in the world, including an exclusive 54 story residence in Mumbai and a groundbreaking home on the 18th hole of Pebble Beach. Their collection of modernist inspired classics, first introduced in 2001, has grown to encompass pieces that today exemplify the finest in high studio design and American craftsmanship. Newell Design's roots span the country, from the Midwest to New York City, as well as the new American West of Colorado and California. Their family history is influenced by pioneers and homemakers, farmers, civil engineers and civil rights activists, a Detroit auto engineer, an interior designer mom, and an artist grandmother. Their active family of 4 boys plays and builds classical instruments, surfs, fly fishes, has a love for nature, and spends their free time enjoying family and friends. They currently live in Orange, California.
