Narrow Chinese Shanxi Cabinet, c. 1900

About the Item

The essence of traditional Chinese furniture is fully expressed in the simplicity and graceful presence of this 18th-century cabinet crafted in the Shanxi province. Made of pine wood with traditional joinery techniques, the narrow cabinet stands tall with two slender doors stretched across the front, meeting at a shallow drawer at the bottom. The two doors open to reveal three shelves that line the middle of the cabinet. The cabinet boasts a bold red lacquer, in contrast to the deep brown interior and backside that has been left untouched to reveal the original grain of the wood. Though the cabinet maintains a simple disposition, it is adorned with two brass lock plates, a simple apron and four semicircles protruding from each corner of the door opening. This cabinet likely stood as the centerpiece of a traditional scholars' studio, carefully selected as a source of beauty and creative inspiration.
