About the Item

A fine pair of English Regency Gonzalo Alves cabinets attributed to John McLean, the upper section with mirror backs behind two shelves and topped with a three-quarter pierced gallery, the top with canted corners and both inlaid and bordered with brass, the two frieze drawers decorated with brass inlay and centred by a mask, the two panel doors enclosing one fixed shelf, the corners with additional brass mounts of masks and leaves, on paw feet to the front and turned toupie feet at the rear. Circa 1810 English Footnote: McLean, John & Son, London, cabinet makers and upholders (1770–1825) John McLean (born 1770; died 1825) was an English furniture and cabinetry maker and designer. He was recognized as one of the best of his era, representing the best in English cabinetmaking. Examples of his furniture can be found in the Victorian and Albert Museum, The California Palace of the Legion of Honor and the Library at Saltram, Devon.

By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu. Edwards & Roberts was one of the principal London companies working in the taste of the late 18th century.
