Rare Italian Renaissance Walnut Study and Desk – 1900

About the Item

A beautiful set consisting of a Mazarin-style desk and a study. These walnut pieces are richly carved, gilded, and painted in the Italian Renaissance style. The desk features a framed top with a molded gilt border. In the center, this desk is upholstered in original wine-red leather with a gilded vignette. On the left side, a sliding shelf expands the work surface. The apron of the desk features three drawers carved in relief with foliage and arabesques. The fronts are recessed, and gilded moldings follow the contours of the drawers. On the sides, we also see higher drawers with a different front carved in relief with arabesques on a granite background and surrounded by painted moldings. This drawer configuration recalls the spirit of Mazarin desks, also through the legs joined by an X-shaped spacer. Indeed, this desk rests on eight legs sculpted with rosettes and decorated with grotesque faces at the top. On each side, the four legs have animated spacers supporting an openwork frame with painted scrolls of the most beautiful effect. The legs end with gilded lion paws. The carved and painted walnut study consists of four doors, an open space, and drawers. The central doors are made of wine-colored recessed sheet metal, painted with putti, they are covered with a crackled varnish and surrounded by moldings. The lock and its chiseled key are functional. On each side, this piece of furniture has taller and narrower doors. They are made of panels carved in relief and painted with arabesques and volutes. In the lower part, this cabinet has drawers with a molded front with a knockout and a wooden pull knob. This piece of furniture rests on eight legs. The front legs end in gilded lion paws. The uprights are carved with rosettes and decorated with grotesque faces at the top. The molded and painted cornice is topped with slender spinning tops and a wooden element painted with a foliate frieze. ******** Period: 1900 Excellent condition after restoration in our cabinetmaking workshop.
