Swedish Modern 1940s Cabinet from Walfrid Svensson & Co in Karlstad
About the Item
This is the Swedish Modern 1940s cabinet from the furniture factory AB Walfrid Svensson & Co in Karlstad.
It comes with stained oak burl veneered double doors, decorated with a beautiful geometric grid pattern. The rest of the cabinet, both inside and out, is veneered in stained oak.
Behind the doors, on the left side, are two removable shelves, and on the right side one removable shelf and three oak burl veneered drawers.
The lock on the right-hand door is in working order, and a key is included.
The cabinet stands on four tall barley-twist oak legs, joined by an H-stretcher base.
The piece was manufactured on September 16, 1947, and is stamped “16 9 47” on the back. It is also marked in red with “SMI 10,” indicating “Svensk Möbelindustri, member No. 10.”
The designer is unknown.

When Walfrid Svensson and his brother started their factory near Karlstad, the principal city of the province of Värmland in western Sweden, in 1892, their strategy was clear. They would “deliver truly first-class products.”
In the company’s catalog from 1902, a standard kitchen chair was priced at SEK 2.50, a considerable sum at the time, considering that an average day laborer earned around SEK 500 per year.
The furniture factory AB Walfrid Svensson & Co in Karlstad was known for its excellent craftsmanship and high level of quality. It appears to have closed for good in the early 1960s.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. There is a small dent on the left side of the top, as shown in the last image marked with an arrow. The cabinet has an even colour throughout, with no noticeable fading. Apart from the small dent, this is a fine and well-presented cabinet.
