About the Item

There are times when words just don't suffice in describing a spectacular piece of historic furniture. This is perhaps one of those examples. This early 18th century, walnut George II, 2-pc. chest of drawers is nothing short of stunning and comes with characteristics that point to it's origin and details of it's creation. On the surface, this chest of drawers tells the story of its age not only by the design, but by the patina and characteristics found on the exterior case construction. Additionally, the era of creation becomes more solidified by the brass hardware and hand-forged/threaded screws and bolts, iron locks, the rose-head nails used in construction and the joints that connect the secondary and tertiary woods in the drawer boxes. But, upon deeper inspection, there are even more clues to this piece that are beautiful and add such unique character to this piece. As found in the images provided, the underneath of a few drawer boxes reveal that they were constructed using reclaimed wood from early crates used for shipping. This is evidenced by the ornate hand script that was typical of 1700's era. The fact that crates were reused as secondary woods in furniture was also a regular practice of the period. In the two images provided, the script matches that used in various letters of the time frame. The content also reveals the high probability of English origin by the locations found in the scripts! Additionally, the underneath of the top drawers reveal to remnants of an early secret locking mechanism using a tongue strip of wood that would catch on the drawer frame upon closure and was released by opening the lower drawer and pushing it upwards to slide the drawer open. It is thought that the iron locks might have been placed a short time after the original date of build and the secret wooden tongue straps would have then been removed and lock and keys used. So many interesting details! For those with discrimination taste in antiques or someone looking for a piece with amazing visual appeal, loaded with interesting clues of the past, this chest would be an amazing piece to consider. Whether in an entry hall, dining or living room area, this is a clearly a versatile piece that will add amazing dimension to the room!
