About the Item

This magnificent Italian 17th-century solid walnut chest of drawers (canterano), is a testament to the craftsmanship of Roman Baroque and Louis XIII reign splendor. Believed to have originated from the Vatican State, this imposing cabinet exudes a character and presence unmatched by contemporary pieces. Crafted entirely from rich walnut, with original bronze handles and locks, this piece of furniture is a true collector's treasure. The chest's most striking feature is its incredible lateral movement, a remarkable achievement considering the hardness and difficulty of carving walnut wood. This fluidity of form creates a sinuous silhouette that belies the piece's austere and imposing nature. Exquisite mouldings frame each drawer and encircle the original bronze locks and handles, adding to the overall sense of elegance and refinement. The raised top section boasts gently curved carved sides, showcasing the artisan's skill and attention to detail. Imagine the skill and dedication required to create the incredible serpentine (wavy) front. The construction is impeccable, featuring dovetail joints that have stood the test of time and hand-carved gouge marks still visible on the the solid walnut doors (not veneered), offering a tangible connection to the craftsman who created this masterpiece centuries ago. This antique storage cabinet features four drawers – two across the top and two below – offering plenty of storage space. Flanking these are two molded doors, providing additional enclosed storage space. The elaborate upper section - with sculpted sides - boasts three further drawers completing this superlative piece. In addition to its aesthetic and historical significance, this piece offers remarkable functionality. The chest provides ample surface area for display, both on its main top and on the raised upper section. This magnificent 17th-century walnut cabinet can serve as a versatile furnishing piece in a variety of settings. Its grand scale and striking presence make it an ideal centerpiece for a formal living room, dining room, or entryway. The ample surface space on the top and raised section offer the perfect stage for displaying cherished objets d'art, floral arrangements, or other decorative accents, creating a visually captivating focal point. Additionally, the generous storage provided by the drawers and compartments makes this piece a practical storage solution for linens, tableware, or other household items in a master bedroom or dining room serving as a credenza. Wherever it is placed, this masterpiece of Baroque craftsmanship is sure to command attention and admiration. This commode is more than just a piece of furniture; it's a work of art, a historical artifact, and a conversation piece that will command attention in any setting. Its exceptional patina, developed over centuries, speaks volumes about its authenticity and provenance. While undeniably elegant, its solid walnut construction and honest craftsmanship also lend it a touch of rustic charm, making it a versatile addition to a variety of interiors. Imagine it as a striking focal point in a farmhouse-inspired dining room, or as a counterpoint to more modern furnishings. This impressive piece is ideal for discerning collectors who appreciate: * The grandeur of the Baroque period. * Exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. * The unique character of antique brown furniture with a rich history and patina!.
