SIGNED MATHIAS ORTMANN ROCOCO chest of gilt walnut, bombéshaped, front with three drawers, later slab of white marble and gilt bronze. During copper plate engraved label Mathias Ortmann. 18th century. Restored. H. 76 B. 68th D. 48th Ortmann furniture is of exceptional quality and represent the finest in Northern European Rococo. It is however particularly highlights Ortmann to other contemporary excellent cabinetmakers is his habit of signing his furniture. Ortmann's name became immortalized for posterity and has ever since been a sought-after but rarely offered collectible. Mathias Ortmann (ca. 1700-1757) was born in Sweden as møbelsnedkersøn. The family moved to Copenhagen to open a workshop in Nyhavn. Mathias Ortmann came early apprenticeship at his father's fast-growing workshop, including exported furniture to Frederik IV's brother Prince Carl mansion Charlottenborg. The mother continued the workshop after his father's death in 1723 and two years later paid Ortmann of master and obtained citizenship in 1727 as a cabinetmaker. On education travel in Europe, mainly in France Louis XV, had Ortmann learned the advantage of signing his furniture. The label has since been collecting the guarantee of a genuine Ortmann. However, not all Ortmann furniture that carries the coveted signature. Ortmann used only during the period 1745-1757, and part of his production is to say before that time. There are also a number of items of furniture from which almost certainly attributable to Ortmann due their particular style. The hallmark of Ortmann style within dressers is an inspiration from his travels in France, but the style is not only French. The furniture has local features that are known only from Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark. How French furniture is often made of exotic woods, using Ortmann mainly walnut imported from Italy. Another characteristic feature is hjørneornamenterne of gilded lead. While the primary material among cabinetmakers to corner ornamentation, gilt, carvings or, in French style, gilt bronze mounts, just Ortmann to cut its base and use cast gilt brass fittings for key signs and grip. Ortmann early dressers are straight-sided, later develops Ortmann the rounded model with gilded and carved pedestal and legs. For the typical Ortmann appearance is also gilded drawer edges and a gilded plaster frieze with light intersections during the gilded upper edge. This golden ribbon is positioned immediately below the marble plate, which covers the label. This frieze does not occur on French commodes, but are of Northern European origin.
