About the Item

Commode Sauteuse France, circa 1770 Dimensions with marble top: H x W x D: 86 x 114 x 60 cm Description: Two-tier piece of furniture standing on curved, flared legs. Due to the relatively long legs and the omission of a third drawer, the piece of furniture appears light and delicate. The curve of the front legs continues upwards over the pilaster strips. The fire-gilded fittings on the leg edges emphasise the curved lines. Acanthus leaf edging at the bottom and volute-like finials at the top complete the leg fittings. The dark wood veneered diagonally on the body of the furniture contrasts beautifully with the light-coloured ormolu. Set off by wafer-thin maple threads, we see symmetrically veneered cartouches in bookmatching light wood on the sides of the furniture and on the drawer fronts. The pull rings with internal medallions show antique-style heads in profile. Together with the keyhole fittings and the appliqué on the frame tongue, they create a tidy overall appearance on the front of the furniture. The top is finished with a loose top made of reddish-grey veined "Basque Jaspe" marble from the Pyrenees. The back panel and top of the body are made of frame and panelled construction. Worth knowing: The chest of drawers offered here is dated to the Transitional period, i.e. the transitional phase from Louis XV to Louis XVI. The sweep and workmanship of the body are still entirely in keeping with the taste of the mid-18th century. The original fittings, on the other hand, can clearly be categorised as classicist. The two-tier structure takes away the "heaviness" of the previous era. Furniture of this type is known as a "commode sauté". Objects comparable in type are known from the Ebensites Pierre Defriche and Germain Landrin, among others. [Kjellberg - Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIe Siècle p. 259, 516] Condition: Very nice, restored condition suitable for everyday use. The fittings have been gently cleaned and the fire gilding is almost perfectly preserved.
