Small Louis XV Commode, so called Commode Sauteuse France (Paris) Rosewood around 1760 Dimensions: with marble top H x W x D: 85 x 80 x 46 cm Description: Two-storey piece of furniture standing on slightly flared legs. The relatively long legs and the omission of a third drawer give the piece of furniture a light and delicate appearance. The sweep of the front legs continues over the pilaster strips to the top. The appliqués decorated with rocailles and C curves underline and reinforce this sweep. The diagonally laid rosewood contrasts beautifully with the dark rosewood. The individual fields are separated from each other by maple thread inlays. The loosely laid grey marble top follows the shape of the corpus. On the back of the marble plate is an old shipping label. The back and top of the corpus are of frame and infill construction. There is the impact stamp signature LARDIN and JME on the front left. Interesting facts: André Antoine LARDIN was born in 1724 and died on 10 August 1790. He held his master's title from 1 July 1750. Lardin was an industrious and capable craftsman. After his death, a large stock of furniture was found in the cabinetmaker's house. The numerous pieces stamped with his stamp that appear in trade and at public auctions confirm the abundance of his production. Lardin worked for various furniture dealers and probably also for a private clientele. He ran his workshop first in the Rue de Charenton and from 1770 in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. His two sons, André Antoine II and Louis François, worked with him for some time and the second-named became his successor in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. In addition to furniture such as secretaries, desks and small tables, André Antoine Lardin produced a considerable amount of chests of drawers: chests of drawers with straight carcasses that corresponded to the formal language of the Louis XIV era, chests of drawers in the taste of the Régence period, curved Louis XV chests of drawers, transitional chests of drawers and straight Louis XVI chests of drawers. All of this furniture is classic in form and décor. They are well crafted and mostly veneered in rose or violet wood. Lardin worked in the taste of the time with geometric patterns, cartouche fields and simulated fluting. Furniture with elaborate inlays such as flowers, birds, trophies, urns or even landscapes appear more rarely. The stamp JME for stands for JURES MENUISIERS-EBENISTES and proves the guild affiliation of the master. A chest of drawers by LARDIN is in the collection of the Carnavalet Museum in Paris. Condition: Restored and in a condition suitable for everyday use. There is a key that fits into the lower lock.
