About the Item

An exceptional 18th century French Transition period three-drawer commode that embodies the transitional period between the reigns of Louis XV (1723-1774 and Louis XVI (1774-1792). Handcrafted of solid oak in Rouen, a port city on the river Seine that is capital of the northern French region of Normandy, this bleached commode exemplifies the fusion of design elements from both periods, creating a unique and elegant piece of furniture. Having a rectangular plank top with canted front corners sitting above a bank of three raised panel drawers it features les perles moldings and carved ribbon swags with oval medallions surrounding the escutcheons. All adorned with the original brass oval handles. The carved, shaped apron features "S" and "C" scrolls. Supported on fluted stiles with carved rosettes raised on short fluted toupie feet. The beautiful bleached finish not only showcases the exquisite oak wood grain but also highlights the intricate carvings adorning the commode. From the Louis XVI ribbon swags and oval medallions to the Louis XV "S" and "C" scrolls, every detail reflects the skilled craftsmanship of the provincial cabinet maker who created it.
