18th century, Small French Veneered and Inlaid Wood Commode

About the Item

This small commode was made in France around the mid-18th century. The top is in Red France marble with a slightly undulating and molded profile. It is veneered in fine wood and inlaid with bois de rose. On the front, two drawers are decorated with wooden inlays inside a sinuous frame and a background of bois de rose, with lighter woods and inlays depicting floral ornaments and small green-leaf designs. The drawer pulls and the key escutcheon are in gilded bronze, chiseled with rocaille motifs. Additional gilded bronze applications embellish the front, under the two drawers, and at the top, on the uprights. The sides are also veneered and decorated with inlays that create floral still-life scenes. The four legs are slightly curved, and an inlaid filet marks the edge, adding lightness and grace. The feet are adorned with gilded bronze chiseled caps in rocaille style. The interior of the commode is made of oak wood. This refined piece of furniture can easily be placed in various settings, from entryways and hallways to living rooms and studies. It can also serve as a bedside table in a bedroom. The piece requires conservation restoration, which we can carry out upon request. Beneath the top, there is a handwritten paper label that is partially illegible, likely referring to a previous ownership from Fontainebleau.
