About the Item
Decorate an entryway or living room with this elegant antique chest of drawers. Crafted in France circa 1890, the bombe commode stands on cabriole legs adorned with gilt bronze mounts at the shoulders and terminating in bronze sabot feet. The scalloped apron is centered with a finely cast foliate bronze ornament. Both sides, shaped in gentle serpentine form, are veneered with intricate two-tone floral marquetry inlaid within scrolling patterns.
The two large drawers feature symmetrical floral motifs framed by foliate arabesques and are fitted with elaborate Rococo-style bronze handles and escutcheons. The commode is topped with a richly colored "Brèche d’Alep" marble slab in variegated shades of beige, ochre, and rose, contoured along the edge to follow the sinuous bombe shape. This prized French stone, quarried near the city of Aleppo and long favored by 18th- and 19th-century ébénistes, is celebrated for its striking brecciated pattern and warm tonal depth that complements fine marquetry veneers.
The piece retains its warm French-polished finish, highlighting the craftsmanship and harmony of design typical of the Louis XV style. The commode is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, displaying beautiful patina and minor wear consistent with its history.
