19th Century Louis XVI Marquetry and Gilt-Bronze Demilune Goat Heads Commode An excellent 19th century Transitional /Louis XVI Style demilune or semi-elliptical commode or chest of drawers with fine cube-pattern marquetry: above a Neoclassical ornament ormolu mount frieze zone a white figured marble top with a gilt bronze pierced surround. The commode is raised by two short cabriole legs with gilt-bronze sabots on the front and two tapering rectangular legs in the back and opens with three demilune drawers, their ormolu handles built in the shape of laurel garlands. The drawers are flanked at the top by two elaborately chiseled and gilt goat head wine garland ornaments. This excellent demilune semi-elliptical commode does not bear a stamp but all the features of elaborate craftsmanship, especially the high quality of the cube-pattern marquetry and the elaborate chiseling of the bronze mounts featuring matte and polished gilding, which leads to a high-level manufactory or workshop of Parisian background like Henry Dasson, Mercier Frères or Maison Millet. Henry Dasson (1825-1896) was one of the finest makers of gilt-bronze mounted furniture in the nineteenth century and started his career as a sculptor. Therefor his furniture shows a very high quality of the chiseling of the bronze.At the 1878 and 1889 Paris Expositions Universelles Dasson exhibited a number of pieces in the Louis XV and XVI styles, as well as pieces of his own modified eighteenth-century design. Dasson ceased production in 1894, and at this time held a sale of his models.The records from this sale show that Paul Sormani, Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener, Maison Millet and Beurdeley acquired drawings and models by Dasson.
