About the Item
South German Biedermeier chest of drawers
Bavaria (Munich)
Cherry
Biedermeier circa 1815
Dimensions: H x W x D: 83 x 117 x 58 cm
Description:
Piece of furniture from the early Biedermeier period circa 1810-1820, standing on pointed legs.
The mirrored cherry veneer is very subtly grained on the front. The builder's focus here was clearly on the fittings and the ink friezes.
The top panel is also veneered in cherry. The more heavily grained walnut edge sets the tone here.
The strictly cubist body is typical of the early Munich Biedermeier period. There is no overhang at the base or top, the edge of the top is merely indicated by the ink painting. Only the slanted pilaster strips break up the cubism.
If you look at the photo showing the back of the chest of drawers, you will notice that the side boards run all the way to the top and that the top panel does not rest on top, as is the case with most other chests of drawers, but lies between the sides. The sides and top are joined together by dovetail joints and then veneered over. The photo, which shows the underside of the chest of drawers, clearly shows the dovetail joints. A beautifully crafted and durable finish.
The traces of the rough planing can be seen in the photo, which shows the galvanising of the drawer.
Condition:
Restored condition suitable for everyday use with authentic patina. The ink painting has age-appropriate rubbing in some places.
