Early 19th Century French Neoclassical Oak Chest of Drawers

About the Item

Graceful and refined, this antique chest of drawers offers a Neoclassical design in natural oak. Hand-built in France in the early 1800s, the paneling of the drawers is precise and geometric; a circular motif in the center of each panel creates a radiant focal point, accentuated by octagonal gilded lock pieces. Papyrus reeds carved into the fluted moldings reflect the vogue for ancient Egyptian motifs that arose following Napoleon’s conquest of Egypt. The surface of the wood has been carefully restored to reveal the organic finish of the oak: a warm golden hue, which lends an impression of natural splendor to the sophisticated form.
