About the Item

Add a touch of refined elegance, understated sophistication, subtle luxury and cozy romantic warmth with this 200+ year old petite Italian commode, elevated by authentic beautifully aged patina, functional versatility, and interesting provenance! (Today, this chest makes for a wonderful bedside table - night stand, side cabinet, hall console, wall accent, and more) Italy, late 18th / early 19th century, likely Roman, executed in timeless Neo-classical style, hand-crafted, carved and painted, and almost certainly custom one-of-a-kind! A striking statement piece with uniquely contrasting simple and complex elements, having clean straight lines, simplistic design, and classic form, in a subdued minimalistic palette, with extensive layered pigments, soft warm tones, mellow sheen, vivid white outlines and richly decorated intricate bas reliefs. Good quality solid pine construction, having a rectangular single board top with desirable overhang and molded edge, over conforming case fitted with three drawers, each retaining the original patinated bronze fittings, all rising gracefully on tapering legs. Decorated in shades of muted monochromatic grays, with neutral undertones and hints of beige, accented with cream antique white trim. Embellished with the most exquisite raised decoration, in classical motif bas reliefs, the grisaille painting technique creating an almost trompe-l'œil effect enhancing the reliefs as if imitating a sculpture. The elaborate artwork depicting putto amidst naturalistic scene with swan, wreath band flora, flaming sun holding fiolated vine, ancient classic era woman in dress, acanthus leaves, urn, and floral medallion with trailing floral vines. - PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION: From the magnificent Dallas, Texas estate of the late T. Boone Pickens (b.1928 -2019). An American business magnate, oil man, billionaire, financier and philanthropist. Acquired from the highly reputable auction house J. He built one of the largest independent natural gas oil companies in the United States and flourished as an entrepreneur thereafter, generating hundreds of billions of dollars in the process. Among his lengthy accolades, Time magazine has identified him one of its "100 Most Influential People", Financial World named him "CEO of the Decade" in 1989, and Oil and Gas Investor identified him as one of the "100 Most Influential People of the Petroleum Century." - DIMENSIONS: (approx) 30" Tall, 26" Wide, 13" Deep - CONDITION: Overall in good original antique condition Attractive appearance, with nicely aged worn organically distressed patina with chippy paint losses, exposed gesso and outstanding craquelure.
