About the Item

Mahogany and gilt bronze commode. Details such as the purity of furniture lines, its clear geometric shape, the angles, the presence of the caryatids in the front and the smooth rear, the centralization of the relief in the appliques of gilded bronze, the use of mahogany and the inspiration in the classical antiquity (Greek and Roman) place the chest of drawers in the Empire style. This dominated in all the French arts in the early nineteenth century during the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), and was one of the most important inspirations of the style Second Empire, which was born under the government of Napoleon III and had great success between, approximately, 1860 and 1880. The work stands out for the high quality of its wood and the perfection of its bronzes, both in its reliefs and in the gold. These French metal ornaments were the best considered in the cabinet for their quality, due to the rigid control established by the central power over the guilds responsible for their production, in which the specialization of the different workshops necessary for their creation and subsequent sale to Teachers, cabinet makers in particular or other commercials that sometimes exported them. Although it is true that it is not a custom piece of furniture, but one made in a system somewhat more similar to serial production, it was in all cases of important works destined for the houses of the principal families, both by the Materials used in them as for following the aesthetic novelties of the moment." Large Empire chest of drawers Paris Mahogany Early 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 97 x 136 x 68 cm Description: The architecturally designed front of the chest of drawers is divided into three zones. A plinth connected to the floor forms the lower section, on which two sturdy columns rest, supporting the upper section, which houses a large drawer. Three further drawers are housed in the centre section of the chest of drawers, which recedes behind the columns. A black granite top forms the upper end.
