Exceptional George III Brass Inlaid Campaign Chest c. 1800

About the Item

An exceptional and original Georgian campaign chest with brass inlays and original flush brass handles and having an absolutely superb colour with wonderful chatoyancy to the timber and rich natural patina. The interior with two banks of short original drawers with brass button handles flanking pigeon holes and one long drawer. The thick black leather skiver with gold tooled detailing which reflects the brass inlays to the carcase. In solid camphor wood throughout and in two parts as it was made with carrying handles on both upper and lower cases, it seems likely that this campaign chest was used in a military context and has seen the battle field. Such chests were used by Generals and Admirals and this example dates from c. 1800 so perhaps witnessed the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 at the battle of Waterloo or in 1805 was on a ship that sailed in the Battle of Trafalgar. The drawer linings are original and solid camphor wood also, as are the small original bracket feet and the chest throughout is original and robust with huge character and personality. It carries small repairs, nicks and dents, bruises and marks from its travels and tribulations but nothing of significance. The secretaire folds down on the original and substantial arched brass slides with brass button releases. The two halves of the chest have locating dowels which hold them firmly in place and solid boards to top of lower case, and to base of upper case. Heavy and robust, entirely usable and really superb rare and early example. The colour alone will enrich any room and add quality, character and great beauty. Dimensions are: width is 38.5 inches, depth is 21.25 inches, height including bracket feet is 40.5 inches.Height of lower case is 20.5 inches, Height of Upper case is 19.5 inches.
