About the Item

A fine French 19th century neoclassical Louis XVI style Transitional mahogany, kingwood and fruitwood marquetry ormolu-mounted five-drawer commode with a Brêche d' Alep marble top, inspired after Jean Henri Riesener (French, 1734-1806), by Maison Forest, Paris. The two main drawers and the apron side drawers with ribbon tied handles within an ormolu trim frame and corner floral rosettes.The sans traverse marquetry center panel depicting an urn with a floral arrangement, all framed with a Kingwood veneer border. The upper corners mounted with finely cast acanthus and foliate mounts and raised on four out-swept legs terminating in lion paw feet. Stamped with a metallic inset plaque engraved MAISON FOREST/J. Bézier Suc2/ 31 rue, cambacéres - Paris, circa 1890-1900. Le Maison Forest was established at in Paris at 14 rue Pierre-Picard in 1883 and also at 31 rue Cambacéres. The firm was renown for their production of high quality furnishings inspired by models of period French Master e´be´nistes in the Louis XIV, XV and XVI styles as well as Empire style with fine gilt-bronze mounts, parquetry and marquetry.
